At the center of the captivating rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His life was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his herd of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind across the single tree on the mountaintop were his main co-dwellers. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.
Narratives of predators prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but discovered no beast.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and here the results of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
